Cypress ceiling options

Like the look of cypress? Start with a sample.

Cypress belongs in the conversation if you want a natural wood ceiling. I would compare the actual boards with cedar before choosing it for your lanai.

Choose the boards you want to look at.

Compare the grain, knots and board width in person. Then put the finish on a sample. A small unfinished piece does not show you what a full finished ceiling will look like.

Cypress is a softwood. If you want a different appearance from cedar, it is worth putting the two side by side.

Outdoor use needs more than a name.

Cypress heartwood can have natural decay resistance. Sapwood and young-growth lumber do not automatically carry the same durability as old-growth heartwood.

For a covered lanai, I want lumber supplied for that use and a coating suited to the exposure. We check rain exposure and the ceiling above it before deciding.

Work out the finish early.

Prefinished boards cut down the finishing work on site. Unfinished boards let us approve a custom color on the actual lumber.

Ask whether a factory product is fully finished or only primed, and how the manufacturer wants field cuts treated.

Cedar is still my starting point.

I usually recommend cedar for natural wood on a covered Florida lanai. I would choose cypress when the boards and approved finish give you the look you prefer, and the supplied product fits the exposure.

This is a wood reference, not an Eminence ceiling installation. The supplied boards and finish sample determine the look of your ceiling.

Questions about the ceiling

Is cypress a hardwood?

No. Cypress is a softwood. Hardwood and softwood are botanical categories; the terms do not tell you how durable a ceiling will be.

Can cypress be used on a covered lanai?

Yes, with lumber and a finish suitable for that use. We review the supplied boards, exposure and installation requirements before specifying it.

Does every cypress board have the same durability?

No. Heartwood versus sapwood and lumber source matter. Old-growth cypress durability should not be assumed for every young-growth board.
